Analysis and visualization of the glass eel behavior (Anguilla anguilla) in the Adour estuary and estimate of its upstream migration speed ArchiMer
Prouzet, Patrick; Odunlami, Marc; Duquesne, Elise; Boussouar, Ahmed.
The studies carried out on the Adour estuary on the migration of glass eels lead to the characterisation of their swimming behavior. Individuals migrate passively with the flood tide current behind the dynamic tide front, and their movements into the water column are linked to the surrounding luminosity and water turbidity. A numerical model was built from observations gathered on glass eel densities during scientific surveys. It uses the outputs of a hydrodynamic model accounting for the variations in the river flow and tide coefficient. It allows the simulation of the displacement of a particle in the longitudinal axis of the estuary. The variation of the vertical movements through the water column takes into account the cloud cover, the moon phases, the...

Changes in the electrophysiological parameters of the posterior intestine of Anguilla anguilla (Pisces) induced by oxytocin, urotensin II and aldosterone BJMBR
In view of the importance of the intestine in the osmoregulation of freshwater fishes, we determined the effects of oxytocin, urotensin II (UII), and aldosterone added to the serosal side of the isolated posterior intestine of the freshwater-adapted teleost Anguilla anguilla on electrophysiological parameters. Oxytocin decreased the short-circuit current (SCC) and transepithelial potential difference (TPD) at concentrations of 1 and 10 mU/ml (to 50% and 42% of control values, respectively), but did not alter these parameters at a concentration of 0.1 mU/ml. UII reduced SCC and TPD at concentrations of 10 nM, 50 nM and 100 nM (to 85% of control values), but increased these parameters at the concentration of 500 nM (to 115% of control values). Aldosterone...

Daily and seasonal estimates of the recruitment and biomass of glass eels runs (Anguilla anguilla) and exploitation rates in the Adour open estuary (Southwestern France) ArchiMer
Bru, Noelle; Prouzet, Patrick; Lejeune, Michel.
The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) is drastically declining in all its distribution area and listed in the red list of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). A rebuilding plan was adopted at European level in 2007, Regulation R(CE) 100/2007, to restore eel abundance to the level observed during the seventies. Its implementation started on the 1(st) of January 2009. This species is heavily threatened by numerous activities including fishing, and its management can only be effective through a systemic approach minimizing the whole range of human-induced impacts on the resource and its habitat. In the framework of the European interregional programme INTERREG IIIB-Atlantic Area-the INDICANG project aimed at elaborating abundance...

Zerai, T.; Mestiri, F.; Romdhane, M.S.; Mejri, S..

Gatri, Y.; Mestiri, F.; Romdhane, M.S.; Mejri, S..
The effect of marination on the shelf life of smoked eel (Anguilla anguilla) was investigated. The fish was hot smoked at 80°C for 90 min and separated into two samples: Lot A was immersed in a solution containing 4% acetic acid, 4% lemon juice and 10% NaCl, then stored at 4°C during 7 days. After the marination process, samples were transferred to a diluted solution, containing 2% acetic acid, and 2% NaCl. Lot B was directly immersed in the same diluted solution. Chemical (total volatile basic nitrogen), physical (pH), microbiological (Total viable count, coliforms, pathogen staphylocoques, sulphate reducing bacteria and salmonellas) and sensory analyses were performed on both lots during the storage. The marination reduced considerably the bacterial...

Flow cytometric determination of genome size in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), thinlip mullet (Liza ramada), and European eel (Anguilla anguilla) ArchiMer
Peruzzi, Stefano; Chatain, Beatrice; Menu, Bruno.
The nuclear DNA content in Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus aurata, Liza ramada, and Anguilla anguilla, was measured by flow cytometric analysis. Male human leukocytes were used as internal reference cells. Nucleated fish erythrocytes were stained simultaneously to human leukocytes with a staining buffer containing propidium iodide (PI). Nuclear DNA contents of target species were estimated in relation to an assigned value of 7.0 pg DNA for male human leukocytes. The DNA content/nucleus (+/- CI) was 1.55 +/- 0.02 pg for D. labrax, 1.90 +/- 0.03 pg for S. aurata, 1.57 +/- 0.02 pg for L. ramada, and 2.43 +/- 0.04 pg for A. anguilla. Intraspecific DNA content variations ranged from 0-9% and averaged around 4% in all taxa. The results did not evidence significant...

Freshwater protected areas: an effective measure to reconcile conservation and exploitation of the threatened European eels (Anguilla anguilla)? ArchiMer
Cucherousset, J; Paillisson, J; Carpentier, A; Thoby, V; Damien, J; Eybert, M; Feunteun, Eric; Robinet, T.
For decades, the European eel Anguilla anguilla (L.) population has been declining strongly despite several management attempts, so additional experiments need to be conducted on management measures. The use of freshwater protected areas has been advocated but their efficiency has never been assessed. In this study, we investigated whether the population structure and the silver eel (mature migrating stage) production differ in fished and protected areas within a marsh wetland (Briere, 7000 ha, Northwest France), using an intensive biological study (electrofishing and trapping) and a survey of the traditional fishery (licenses, questionnaires and creel surveys). First, we found that fishermen mainly targeted > 320-mm yellow eels (sedentary stage) using...

ArchiMer
Gascuel, Didier; Elie, Pierre.
The study of 41 samples, which were perfomed in the Loire and Vilaine estuaries, during elver fishing seasons 1979-80 and 1980-81, allowed us to define a rapid method of sample analysis in laboratory. The fish catches of one-year old and over were not abundant (eel, mullet, sprat, flounder, sole); on the other hand, larval stages of herring, flounder and also of mullet, sole and sprat were caught in large quantities. In addition, there were numerous catches of brown shrimp and species of trophic interest such as goby and macroplanktonic crustaceans. It is noteworthy that the by-catches are numerous during the fishing season.

Molecular Ontogeny of First-Feeding European Eel Larvae ArchiMer
Politis, Sebastian Nikitas; Sorensen, Sune R.; Mazurais, David; Servili, Arianna; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis; Miest, Joanna J.; Clemmesen, Catriona M.; Tomkiewicz, Jonna; Butts, Ian A. E..
Digestive system functionality of fish larvae relies on the onset of genetically pre-programmed and extrinsically influenced digestive functions. This study explored how algal supplementation (green-water) until 14 days post hatch (dph) and the ingestion of food [enriched rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis) paste] from 15 dph onward affects molecular maturation and functionality of European eel larval ingestion and digestion mechanisms. For this, we linked larval biometrics to expression of genes relating to appetite [ghrelin (ghrl), cholecystokinin (cck)], food intake [proopiomelanocortin (pomc)], digestion [trypsin (try), triglyceride lipase (tgl), amylase (amyl)], energy metabolism [ATP synthase F0 subunit 6 (atp6), cytochrome-c-oxidase 1 (cox1)], growth...

1. Toxicite aigue a l'egard de quinze organismes ArchiMer
Maggi, Pierre; Cossa, Daniel.
The acute toxicity of 5 anionic detergents towards 15 marine organisms is related in this study which indicates that fish are very susceptible while Crustacea are the most resistant animals. Phytoplankton and molluscs appear to have intermediate sensibility tothose syndets. The lethal concs of the 5 anionic detergents used in this experiences towards the most susceptible marine spp are near one mgm/l.

Cossa, Daniel; Maggi, Pierre.
In this research, biodegradation associated with evaluation of the variations of acute toxicity of 5 anionic detergents towards Anguilla anguilla is described. It appears that the process of anionic detergent biodegradation in sea water is similar to the results obtained by many authors working on fresh water. The experimentation shows 2 different kinds of behavior among the 5 anionic detergents tested: (a) the first category is composed of syndets, without aryl group in their formulation, which are promptly oxidized by bacteria and do not reveal variation of acute toxicity during their biodegradation; (b) the other group includes LAS; those syndets need a quite long bacterial acclimation. On the other hand, their toxicity is reduced whilst they are...

Tabouret, Helene.
In a context of decline of European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) and search for biological markers of habitat use and quality, a multidisciplinary approach was engaged on the Adour estuary and its associated wetlands. Two axes were developed. The first axe aimed at highlighting the successive presence of the species in different ecosystems based on the otolith elemental composition. The second aimed at the evaluation of the chemical pressure underwent by eels based on the contaminant bioconcentration in soft tissues and the early molecular response to the chemical stress. With a view to the analyses of otolith elemental composition taking into account the 3D structure, the low elemental concentration in the matrix and keeping the finest spatial resolution,...

Role of steroid hormones and external factors in the control of pituitary gonadotropic activity of female European eel (Anguilla anguilla ). ArchiMer
Leloup, H; Fontaine, Y; Dufour, S; Querat, B.
Gonadotropic activity is relatively low in the female freshwater (FW) eel (A. anguilla ): pituitary GTH was about 15 ng equivalent cGTH/mg fresh tissue. Plasma GTH was always less than 1 ng equivalent cGTH/ml and often undetectable (< 0.2 ng equivalent cGTH/ml). Ovarian steroidogenesis in FW fish is similarly low; plasma concentration of both free testosterone (T) and free estradiol (E sub(2)) were less than 0.3 ng/ml as measured by RIA. Treatment with E sub(2) in FW fish caused a great increase in pituitary GTH, up to 1000 times control values, without changing plasma GTH. Stimulation of gonadotropic activity and ovarian development occur during the eel's migration to the Sargasso Sea. Adaptation to seawater (SW) caused a great increase of plasma E...

Silver eel population size and escapement in a Mediterranean lagoon: Bages-Sigean, France ArchiMer
Amilhat, Elsa; Farrugio, Henri; Lecomte-finiger, R.; Simon, Guillaume; Sasal, P..
Much concern has been raised about the decline in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population. European management plans for the recovery of the stock are now in preparation, the main objective being to increase the escapement of the potential spawners (silver eels) in each basin to allow 40% of the pristine biomass to escape. However, there are relatively few studies on silver eel escapement and production, and no recent measurement of escapement in lagoons, habitats which support large silver eel sub-populations in the Mediterranean region. A mark-recapture study was carried out in autumn 2007 in order to estimate the number of silver eels migrating from the Bages-Sigean lagoon in the South-West of France. The migrating population, mostly males...

Silver European eels health in Mediterranean habitats ArchiMer
Amilhat, Elsa; Fazio, Geraldine; Simon, Gael; Manetti, Marc; Paris, Severine; Delahaut, Laurence; Farrugio, Henri; Lecomte-finiger, Raymonde; Sasal, Pierre; Faliex, Elisabeth.
The degradation in the quality of silver eel and their health could have been a major factor in the collapse of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) population. However, the health status of the spawners has been poorly studied until now. This study evaluated the quality of migrant male silver eels from four Mediterranean habitats in France presenting different degrees of contamination: Canet-Saint-Nazaire, Salses-Leucate and Bages-Sigean lagoons and La Berre River. We considered pathogens including Anguillicoloides crassus and EVEX virus and the concentration of chemical contaminants including PCBs, OCs and heavy metals. Our study results revealed different patterns of pollution and infection in the four habitats, with high individual variability. No...

Simultaneous use of strontium:calcium and barium:calcium ratios in otoliths as markers of habitat: Application to the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) in the Adour basin, South West France ArchiMer
Tabouret, Helene; Bareille, G.; Claverie, F.; Pecheyran, C.; Prouzet, Patrick; Donard, O. F. X..
Sr:Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in water from the Adour estuary show a clear relationship with the salinity of the surrounding water for salinities <20, while ratios are almost constant above this level of salinity. A Positive relationship was observed for the Sr:Ca ratio, whereas it was inverse for the Ba Ca ratio. These two elemental ratios were measured in the otoliths of the European eels (Anguilla anguilla L) using femtosecond laser ablation linked to an ICP-MS (fs-LA ICP-MS) There was a direct relationship between the elemental ratios recorded in eel otoliths and those found in water from fresh and marine areas, suggesting that Sr Ca and Ba:Ca ratios in eel otoliths can be used as markers of habitat in this estuary Continuous profiling allowed the...
